Since August 2013, UDC has engaged with the local Residents’ Association of Pondicherry’s historic French Quarter, facilitating their various community initiatives.
Key Initiatives
Solid waste management – To ensure prevention of indiscriminate street-side dumping of household waste, a daily door-to-door garbage collection system was launched. Our role included ensuring the participation of every resident and business within the precinct, monitoring waste pick-up, streamlining fee collection system, and a central information database.
Community Events – Since April 2014, we are facilitating community-building initiatives such as ‘Meet your Neighbours, ‘Become a Street Champion’ etc.
Street Improvement – Since March 2014, we have been helping residents conduct their own street audits, identifying issues and opportunities for improvement, and facilitating local action to achieve complete streets within the neighbourhood. UDC also acts as a bridge between the association, the local heritage conservation body, and the government, facilitating larger neighbourhood improvement projects.
The initiative is part of a long-term collaboration between the Raj Bhavan Neighbourhood Association, INTACH Pondicherry, and UDC, towards improvement of Pondicherry’s core heritage area.
