As part of the cycles for change challenge – Kochi, UDC worked alongside CSML and GIZ to identify and design a temporary cycling network in the core area of the city.
Out of all the options identified, the network containing Goshree Chathiyath road, Banerji road, MG road, AM road, Foreshore road and Church landing road was selected owing to its connectivity, mixed land use and multiple transit nodes. A handlebar survey was conducted by CSML during a cycle rally along this stretch and cyclists were given the opportunity to discuss their requirements for the pilot cycle stretch.
The traffic and pedestrian volumes, flows along the ROWs were studied followed by a detailed assessment of the road conditions and traffic patterns at intersections. Studies on how the stretch can fit in with the larger transit patterns of the city were undertaken.
The subsequent design was developed treating the cycling track along Goshree Chathiyath road to be leisure based whereas the cycling track along Banerji road and MG road were more transit oriented.
The project was executed and retained for the period of ___ days at the end of which residents and users were surveyed on their preferences and experiences centered around the cycling stretch.
