Schools Beyond Books

With children around the world calling out for action on climate change, can our children turn climate warriors through their school campuses?

Schools Beyond Books reimagines school campuses as laboratories for sustainable living. This cyclical model not only demonstrates efficient resource use but also empowers young people to become custodians of local change, blending environmental literacy with leadership and civic responsibility.

This laboratory focuses on reducing the miles travelled by water, food, energy and waste by setting up water harvesting systems, energy efficient devices, tree plantations, kitchen gardens, composting pits and source segregation with the students themselves.
Recycled greywater irrigates kitchen gardens; the produce feeds mid-day meals; kitchen waste is composted to nourish the soil again- closing the loop between learning and living. Through sustainability audits, co-design, and participatory stewardship, students become active agents of change. Rooted in a learning-by-doing pedagogy, it enables students to learn sustainability by practicing it – transforming their campuses into tangible examples of environmental stewardship and circular economy in action.

A key element of the Schools Beyond Books project is the integration of circularity into the sustainable practices on campus. In essence, the initiative is built around three primary components:
1. Sustainability Audit: A review of the school’s existing infrastructure and resource usage, identifying areas for improvement.
2. Design and Implementation: Designing and installing sustainable interventions in the school campus
3. Participatory Engagement: Involving students directly in the audits, setting up and stewardship of these systems.
By integrating sustainability and circularity into the daily fabric of school life, Schools Beyond Books not only fosters environmental awareness but also cultivates leadership and responsibility among students, preparing them to become active custodians of a more sustainable future, both at school and beyond.
